The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service (TALS) is a community legal service that specializes in criminal, civil, and family law matters for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Tasmania. They offer a range of services including representation in Magistrates Court and Supreme Court matters, parenting matters, child safety advice, discrimination cases, victims of crime compensation enquiries, and more. TALS is dedicated to providing culturally safe and holistic services that are inclusive and open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Tasmania.
TALS is committed to advocating for justice, equality, and human rights for the Aboriginal community in Tasmania. They provide a dedicated holistic service for family violence and sexual assault victims and survivors, known as Support, Information, Strength. TALS is funded by the Australian Government’s National Legal Assistance Partnership and works closely with key partners such as the Tasmanian Government, NATSILS, ATSILS, NIAA, and other Aboriginal community-controlled organizations in Tasmania.
As a local Aboriginal community-controlled organization, TALS is under the governance of the Aboriginal Corporation of Tasmanian Legal Services. They aim to reduce the rate of negative contact with the justice system for Aboriginal Tasmanians and work to ensure that even the most vulnerable individuals have access to legal assistance. TALS welcomes Aboriginal people in Tasmania to become members of the organization and is dedicated to fighting for Aboriginal justice and rights.
